7 QUESTIONS WITH MICHAEL CHARALAMBOUS OF NYUMBA SALON, BELGRAVIA
Since its launch in 2003, Nyumba by Michael Charalambous has established itself as one of London’s leading lights for beautiful, bespoke hairdressing and beauty. I caught up with Michael to find out a little more about Belgravia's dynamic hot spot!
How long have you been working in the hair and beauty industry?
I have been working in the industry since 1986 – over 30 years.
What lead you into the industry - had you always wanted to pursue this career?
I always wanted to pursue this career. When I lived in Tanzania, we had very amateur haircuts and we all looked the same. We used to save our own haircuts and do them when we were abroad. Both myself and my younger brother Constantinos decided to do hair. In a way, we thought this would save people from bad work.
You started off in Mayfair. What made you choose your current (very well situated) London location?
After Mayfair’s rent going sky high and Grosvenor Estate being reluctant to renew our contracts on Mount Street, I managed to see the lease and very fortunately find 1 Sloane Square. I wanted this shop before Mayfair and even way back when I worked in Harrods as the creative director.
You work alongside your beautiful and talented wife, Giula Zuccaroli. Do you and the team have different specialities within the salon?
My wife Giulia Zuccaroli (Artistic Colour Director) is the head of colour and we have amazing therapists, reflexologist Danuta Budzinska, Make up artists Demi–Clair, Joanna Lemonari and Donna Chatsatrian, but also the world’s best skin facialist Pietro Simone, including Sanita Martinkena our manicure and pedicurist queen and other services.
We have hair extensions, hair pieces, wigs, eyelash extensions, semi-perminant make up, Afro hairdresser Donna Marie, and many more!
Your salon feels very different to other high-end salons in the local area / across London. How did you go about creating such a warming and welcoming environment?
I only knew that it would work if it looked like my home in Tanzania and reminded me of Africa. That is what I miss the most in my life.
Nyumba is a magnet for well-known celebrities and popular local characters. What's the secret ingredient for attracting such attention?
Professionalism, talent, high standards, passion and good manners.
A decent hair transformation can change someone's entire outlook and mood. What other treatments does Nyumba offer to contribute to this feeling of fabulousness?
Pietro Simone skin care.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Honest, talented and loving.
