10 QUESTIONS WITH HENRIETTA LAWRENCE, FOUNDER OF LEIM
“I think people who are drawn to Leim are ones who are exploring sustainable fashion but who need a whole outfit to justify the cost.”
1.) Welcome to The London Musings! For those who don't know, what is Leim all about?
Good morning Victoria! Leim is an ethical brand specialising in uncomplicated womenswear, specifically beautiful jumpsuits that you don’t need to take off to go to the toilet.
2.) What inspired you to launch Leim?
Honestly, from personal experience I know just how complicated it is to go to the toilet when you’re wearing a jumpsuit. I have first hand experience of the joy of Glastonbury toilets wearing a jumpsuit (if you know, you know) but the idea really started to take shape once I made a jumpsuit for myself around 2 years ago now. It had these beautiful mother of pearl buttons all the way down the back. Those tiny ones that look beautiful but I realised half way through the jumpsuit that it was going to be a nightmare to get in and out of alone. So I decided to try and solve the problem and create a version to solve the toilet problem - and that's how Leim started!
3.) As jumpsuits go, yours are particularly beautiful looking, featuring added technical details to make life easier. Do you have a background in design?
Thank you! I don’t have a technical design background but I studied textiles at school and I have always made my own clothes. This experience has helped because I tend to make my own patterns for the things I make myself, based off what I think will look cute or if I’ve seen something I like but it’s not quite right. It also helps that I wear a lot of jumpsuits!
4.) Can you describe the two different jumpsuit style and the colours available to us?
Absolutely - so the Sisterhood is a strappy style that you can wear in summer with nothing underneath (the top is fitted so it’s designed to be worn without a bra) or with a top underneath during the winter. I wanted a style that people could invest in and wear throughout the year - I'm always thinking about the cost-per-wear!
The Bringing Sexy Back has 3/4 length sleeves and a wide boat neck, with ties down the back (so you get a cute peek of skin but it’s not too much for work, for example). The Bringing Sexy Back trousers have these ingenious tucks that make your bum look amazing, too!
Both styles have long trousers, the same ezp® functionality and pockets that you can actually fit things in.
5.) Where are jumpsuits made?
The jumpsuits are handmade in a beautiful factory in Sheffield, UK.
6.) Sustainability is a big topic in the fashion industry. Can you tell us a little about your thoughts around this?
Absolutely, it’s something I’m really passionate about. I didn’t want to create just another brand which ignores the issues the fashion industry has currently around both environmental but also social sustainability. Mass production is seriously harming our planet. It’s why the jumpsuits are all made from organic (where possible), biodegradable (again, where possible) fabrics and materials.
The jumpsuits are made by garment workers in Sheffield, as I said, who are paid a fair wage, in a beautiful factory which is light and airy, with enough space to move. Some of the factories I visited would, I'm pretty certain, not pass basic building or working environment regulations, so I'm really happy with the factory I have found and that I can categorically say that there's good renumeration and conditions.
7.) Jumpsuits are an instant outfit and a great wardrobe staple. Who do you think will be drawn to Leim?
I think people who are drawn to Leim are ones who are exploring sustainable fashion but who need a whole outfit to justify the cost. You’re right that they are an instant outfit and Leim’s buyer appreciates the ease of wearing one to work, changing your shoes and be instantly ready for a night out or an event.
8.) What's the most exciting thing about launching your brand?
Oh - definitely talking to the people who are the most excited about these jumpsuits. For so long they’ve been in my head and now to see people who are really excited about owning one - that’s the best feeling ever.
9.) Where do you see Leim in 3 years time?
I can’t wait to be out and about and to see someone wearing a Leim jumpsuit. If that happens in 3 years, totally spontaneously, that will be an amazing feeling.
10.) When you're not busy working, where can you be found?
The pub! Haha I will probably be with my boyfriend or my friends in Stoke Newington (London) wandering around the shops, or eating or drinking somewhere. I'm a bit obsessed with good food and we're so spoiled in London.
