10 QUESTIONS WITH CHARRLOTTE DE'DAVIS, FOUNDER OF BARDOU BEAUTY

We have been catching up with Charrlotte De'Davis, business extraordinaire and founder of beauty brand with a difference, BARDOU BEAUTY...

1.) Can you tell us a little about BARDOU BEAUTY?

BARDOU BEAUTY is a born-digital lifestyle brand looking to challenge the widespread belief that beauty is only skin deep and the fact that for beauty brands the bottom line is, well…the bottom line. We strongly believe that a woman is at her most beautiful when she feels confident, empowered and strong and we want to support and empower women to find, embrace and enhance their own meaning of beauty.

Our values are the foundation upon which we are building our 3 growth pillars: A growing range of ethically-sourced and cruelty free products, luxury holistic salon services and academies for the education of women in beauty. Philanthropy is also at the heart of the brand, and through our BARDOU Foundation we help raise awareness around issues impacting women, whilst offering opportunities for education and employment across our growing network. We truly believe there is beauty in equality.

2.) What inspired you to create BARDOU BEAUTY?

I founded the business in its inception days as a line of luxury beauty products and blow dry bars across London. But with growing importance and awareness around ethical business and social responsibility, paired with my desire to create a global community of empowered women, rather than just another beauty brand, the business has changed radically since then, from the vision to the values that are embedded within BARDOU BEAUTY.

3.) Can you tell us a little about your career so far? Had you always been interested in beauty?

My background before BARDOU BEAUTY was in luxury events and I have always had a keen interest in beauty and the industry and I have always been entrepreneurial at heart. My approach when I first joined the business was as a consumer with a genuine passion for hair and beauty, so the product became better as a result. Once I understood the potential of the brand and the meaningful contributions to society a business like this could make, I got fully passionate and immersed in the beauty world.

4.) What makes BARDOU BEAUTY special and different from other beauty brands?

The secret of the company’s rising success I believe lies in the unique attitude we have adopted towards the very concept of beauty. With our three pillars and company vision, we fill a gap in the market for inclusive brands that allow women to interpret beauty in their own personal way, rather than fighting to live up to a constructed ideal. In addition, our company values – 9 ethical values such as being inspirational and altruistic – emphasise the way we work together at BARDOU BEAUTY be it with our team, customers or suppliers.

5.) You have a keen interest in supporting women in business. Why is it important to you that BARDOU BEAUTY keeps this at the forefront of the brand?

Our support of women in business transpires not only through our academies, where we educate, train and assist women to find meaningful employment within the beauty industry but also within the BARDOU BEAUTY team itself. For example, we worked with the amazing Katy Fridman, founder of “Flexible Working for Mums Like Me”, to find and recruit one of our key employees Sharon Segal. The purpose of the group (which now boasts almost 12,000 members) is to create a community of likeminded mums who offer support and advice in relation to maintaining a career and work/life balance after having kids. We believe a woman’s beauty lies in feelings of empowerment and self-confidence and we simply want to make BARDOU BEAUTY a source of inspiration and opportunities for women worldwide.

6.) What challenges have you had to overcome when creating and growing your brand?

I am a self-taught entrepreneur so many aspects of this journey have been quite the challenge for me! My drive and resilience come from my desire to build an authentic brand and a thriving business that is both profitable as well as being ethical and responsible.

7.) What inspires you?

I find inspiration in motivating and inspiring women and learning of their success! I try to “be my own brand” and would like to help more women to do the same, by identifying what makes them unique and helping them embrace it. We’ve built so much of BARDOU BEAUTY around this philosophy.

8.) Which BARDOU BEAUTY products do you recommend for the summer season?

My personal pick, and a firm favourite among our customers and our growing celebrity following would be the BARDOU BEAUTY Immaculate Spray Dry Shampoo. It’s my secret weapon during the hot Summer months when your hair just needs a little freshen up to take you from day to night.

9.) What advice do you have for women thinking of take a leap of faith to start their own business?

You can’t let fear hold you back from going after your ambitions. Whether your challenges are coming from outside or from within, an unshakeable drive and determination can move mountains! It’s up to you to design and create a life and career you love – you’re the only one powerful enough to stand in your own way or able to give yourself permission to go for it and make it happen. There’s nothing more beautiful than a woman confident enough to work for her dreams.

10.) How would you summarise BARDOU BEAUTY in 3 words?

BARDOU BEAUTY is Inspiring – Empowering - Embracing
